The impact of adjacent-dependencies and staged-input on the learnability of center-embedded hierarchical structures

A theoretical debate in artificial grammar learning (AGL) regards the learnability of hierarchical structures. Recent studies using an AnBn grammar draw conflicting conclusions (Bahlmann and Friederici, 2006, De Vries et al., 2008). We argue that 2 conditions crucially affect learning AnBn structures: sufficient exposure to zero-level-of-embedding (0-LoE) exemplars and a staged-input. In 2 AGL experiments, learning was observed only when the training set was staged and contained 0-LoE exemplars. Our results might help understanding how natural complex structures are learned from exemplars

Resonant Tidal Excitations of Inertial Modes in Coalescing Neutron Star Binaries

We study the effect of resonant tidal excitation of inertial modes in neutron stars during binary inspiral. For spin frequencies less than 100 Hz, the phase shift in the gravitational waveform associated with the resonance is small and does not affect the matched filtering scheme for gravitational wave detection. For higher spin frequencies, the phase shift can become significant. Most of the resonances take place at orbital frequencies comparable to the spin frequency, and thus significant phase shift may occur only in the high-frequency band (hundreds of Hertz) of gravitational wave. The exception is a single odd-paity m=1m=1 mode, which can be resonantly excited for misaligned spin-orbit inclinations, and may occur in the low-frequency band (tens of Hertz) of gravitational wave and induce significant (>> 1 radian) phase shift.Comment: Minor changes. 6 pages. Static analysis of a sonar dome rubber window

The application of NASTRAN (level 16.0.1) to the static analysis of a sonar dome rubber window (SDRW) was demonstrated. The assessment of the conventional model (neglecting the enclosed fluid) for the stress analysis of the SDRW was made by comparing its results to those based on a sophisticated model (including the enclosed fluid). The fluid was modeled with isoparametric linear hexahedron elements with approximate material properties whose shear modulus was much smaller than its bulk modulus. The effect of the chosen material property for the fluid is discussed
